Automated Clustering

Getting Started with AutoCluster

AutoCluster is a commonly used tool for clustering your DNA matches based on the Leeds Method.

To get started, follow these steps:

Creating an Account and Adding a Website

    1. Go to www.geneticaffairs.com, create an account, and log in to your account
    2. Under the “Websites & Profile” tab, click on “Add Website”
    3. Choose your testing company – for example, Ancestry – and click on “Add AncestryDNA Account”
    4. Use your login and password information for THAT company and then click “add new website” and confirm with “Yes, add website” (Note: If the website repeatedly fails to accept a password, try using another browser.)

Starting an Analysis

    1. Under the “Websites & Profile” tab, choose from your “available websites”
    2. Choose the profile (aka person) you want to work with, and choose “AutoCluster”
    3. Set the range of maximum to minimum cM for your analysis (Note: If this is your first run, I recommend 400 cM to 90 cM to give a good chance of creating 4 clusters based on your 4 grandparent lines)
    4. Click “Perform Analysis” and confirm with “Yes, perform AutoCluster analysis”
    5. You will receive an email with 3 files attached; the first two are HTML files and the third is an Excel file. (Note: I usually work with the Excel file.)

Note: AutoCluster runs usually cost 25 credits which is equivalent to 25 cents each. However, when you sign up for an account you get 200 free credits.

Beyond AutoCluster

Besides your basic AutoCluster analysis, Genetic Affairs also offers other options which I will discuss in future posts. These options currently include:

    • Using starred matches, extending clusters, or combining these two functions
    • Rule based AutoCluster
    • AutoTree

    Hi Dana!
Thanks for the information about AutoCluster.
I am a beginner to this but have now uploaded a DNA kit for analysis, I help a friend of mine find her unknown dad. I don’t know how to interpret the results when it comes, so I might come back with a question if it’s ok with you?
    Have a good time

    Hi Dana
I tried the autocluster but it only allows familytreedna to be added. 23andme is not allowed and ancestry does not appear as a option. Are there any other ways ti run auto clusters outside my heritage?
