My Tree Completeness
How many of your ancestors have you identified? Blaine Bettinger shared a spreadsheet on the Facebook group, “Genetic Genealogy Tips & Techniques” (GGT&T), where you can enter your data to get the percentage of known ancestors.
(NOTE: For future comparison, I did not include women whom I had identified only by their first name.)
At 7 generations, or back to my 5th great grandparents, I have identified 57% of my direct ancestors.
At 6 generations, or back to my 6th great grandparents, I have identified 83% of my direct ancestors.
What percentage have you identified? You can create your own spreadsheet, or download Blaine’s free spreadsheet in the files section of GGT&T.
OUCH!
43 of 255 identified through 7 generations = 17% (93.5% through 3 generations)
I’ve been working for more than 20 years and my great aunt worked on 1 line for decades before that. Just enjoy where you are in the process and keep searching! 🙂
Fun! Thanks for this! I built my own version of the sheet and learned I have 2 great grandmothers with no known parents. But that I have 28/32 at G5.
138/255 at G7 = 54%
101/127 at G6 = 80%
Good start for only just learning who my adopted grandpa’s parents both were in the last month 🙂
Wow, Geoff! That’s great! I started working on my family tree over 20 years ago and a great aunt worked for several decades on one branch for probably 20 years before that. Congrats on finding your adopted grandpa’s parents. Have you been able to make contact with any of your biological family? Have you seen any family photo?
Yes, there is a photo of the birth mother’s family (she was a widow – in black – her sisters were all in white).
And I’ve contacted one 1/2 2C on her side, and I’ve been in touch with a couple people on the father’s side. Baby steps. 🙂
Those are terrific “baby steps”!
