What’s Your Genealogy Timeline?

Happy New Year!

I’m just back from a New Year’s cruise I took with my daughter, mom, and niece. We sailed on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida to St. Kitts, St. Maarten, Haiti, and Puerto Rico and had a wonderful time. But, now it’s time to get back to every day life and the “work” we call genealogy!

What an interesting idea, Dana. I've never thought of putting that in a timeline. I got serious about family history in 1975 & became a professional genealogist in 1986. Offhand I can't recall when I created my Website with genealogy advice, names from my indexes to records in Archives, and my own family tree – but it was probably about 1998.

  I did a huge amount of family history research before the Internet existed, and that has (I believe) given me an advantage. Researching my British ancestors from Australia involved writing snail-letters, and everything took forever… so I had lots of time to read how-to books, history books, FHS journals, etc. I also worked as a volunteer at my local FHS library. I learned so much from all of those activities!

  Judy, what a wonderful background! I'm thankful I started genealogy when a lot of it was still writing letters and microfilm. There weren't records online. We spent a lot of time writing inquiries. And, we treasured each new discovery more. I know I spent a lot more time analyzing each record I found. It's a "basic" I need to get back to! But, with, for instance Ancestry, it's so easy just to click "save" and go on to the next item!

Dana, you and I started our genealogical journey in the same year. My mother's first cousin got me going and inspired me with her discoveries and her questions about the other side of my family. Thanks for sharing your timeline.

  Marian, That's neat! I think it was a great time to start genealogy, though of course I wish I had started earlier! And, I wish I had done more back when I started as so many people have died over the past 18 years that surely would have been able to tell me things. However, I was doing genealogy for 5+ years while one grandmother was still alive, and I was able to ask her questions and get copies of her photos.

Interesting – I've never thought about it. I started about 7 years ago and it seems to go in cycles. Sometimes I spend a lot of time on it, others I barely look at it.
